The State Highways Agency in Hessen, Germany recently installed a GRP road bridge:
“In densely populated areas, conventional bridge building projects very quickly cause severe traffic congestion. This is a further argument in favour of GRP bridges, which can be installed in a matter of hours and also have the advantage of being resistant to corrosion,” says Stefan Hodes, press spokesman for Hessen State Highways Agency.
Factory-made
Due to their light weight the bridges can be made in the factory and then transported to the installation site. There they can be erected on prepared foundations in a matter of hours. Installation can also be done at night, causing negligible disturbance to road or rail traffic.
“Some 70% of Germany’s road bridges are worn out concrete structures more than 40 years old. As such they are imposing increasingly heavy strain on our maintenance budget. The new GRP road bridge is resistant to salt and frost, which makes it a future-proof alternative,” adds Stefan Hodes.
